Advances in Low Slope Asphalt Roofing
As the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) celebrates its 100th anniversary, we’re recognizing the century of advances that have improved asphaltic low-slope roofing.Through research and technology, modified bitumen roofing continues to be durable, high-performing, sustainable and beautiful. Low-slope asphalt roofing has evolved from traditional built-up multi-ply systems, to modified bitumen membranes, to the hybrid modified bitumen built-up roof membrane systems often used today. All three options can adapt to virtually any roofing challenge.
Modifying bitumen with APP (atactic polypropylene) or SBS (styrene butadiene styrene) polymers enhances the performance characteristics of the asphalt, improving response to stress caused by temperature extremes, impacts, and foot traffic. This provides strength and durability, enhances the ability of the finished product to resist temperature extremes, adds puncture resistance, and helps improve fire resistance.
Surfacing provides a durable top layer to protect the roofing membrane. There are an abundance of options available. This top layer can also allow for energy-efficient reflective roofing granules. Reflective or ‘cool roofing’ properties can reduce energy consumption and lower energy costs by reflecting sunlight and absorbing less heat. Another ‘green’ option for low-slope asphalt roofing is a vegetative roofing system.
Modified roofing systems can be installed in a number of ways: hot asphalt, cold adhesive, self-adhering and heat-welding — or often a combination of these methods. Variety in installation assures the right system for any design, budget or performance challenge. Each application consists of redundant layers that make the roofing system durable and provide long-term performance, providing protection against extreme weather and ensuring compliance with even the toughest industry standards.
Low-slope roofing is tasked with protecting our most important buildings, from schools and apartment complexes to retail stores and government buildings. A roofing system that performs over time is the most important choice you can make to protect your investment.
